Deep in the mosquito ridden tropical air, lived this fierce Garifuna Grandmother, a descent of shipwrecked African slaves on the Mosquito Coast of Honduras. In a mud hut, roofed with coconut fronds, I was blown away by a lone portrait of this grandmother hanging on the wall of a local family I was visiting. I was 18 years old, far away from home, volunteering for a year in a rural hospital in this region, but her portrait was my inspiration. I sketched it and many years later painted this portrait of her. Look out for her on the TV show, Leverage, a crime caper drama with Noah Wyle.
